Long-term care is often required after car accidents

Car accidents can leave victims with serious injuries. Some of these injuries may take weeks or even months to heal. However, for many victims, the road to recovery can be much longer. Serious injuries often require lengthy rehabilitation. In some cases, the damage may be permanent. Car accidents often require the following types of long-term care.

Physical rehabilitation

Not all injuries can be fixed with surgery or medication. For many, rehabilitation is necessary to increase mobility and function. Notable injuries requiring this type of care include spinal injuries and traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). Physical therapy generally consists of performing specially designed exercises regularly. Without this treatment, victims struggle to improve their quality of life and independence after a crash.

Modifications to the home

Mobility tends to be a significant issue for those who have been seriously injured. They may struggle to move around their own home. Home modifications, such as ramps and safety rails, can help with this, but these are expensive. An individual may also require in-house care. Carers can prepare meals, and help with hygiene and other tasks around the house. Again, this type of long-term care comes at a financial cost.

Mental health support

Mental health issues after car accidents are often overlooked. However, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in particular, is a serious issue. It may take years of therapy and medication before someone starts to rebuild their emotional well-being. If your accident was caused by someone else’s negligence, you may be entitled to personal injury compensation. This can help with the cost of your long-term care. Seek legal guidance to find out more.
